Recording Royalties for Artists
Interesting to learn that artists get nothing when a song is played on the radio. Labels do, but artists dont. This is because radio provides "free advertising." That might have been true in 1950, but it is not true today. Over 90% of songs played are more than 3 years old - they are not selling records.
This is not the case for satellite radio (which I love), or internet radio (which I find useful at times): both of these pay the artist as well as the label.
One of the biggest problems with this is that it is cheaper to play American songs on the radio in other countries than local songs (as they dont have to pay US artists, but do have to pay local ones). This, no doubt, contributes to the endless stream of terrible American pop songs you are bombarded with on your way through Europe.
The madness has to stop. Make European (and American) terrestrial radio stations pay the artists. Actually, make the Europeans pay double or triple - the songs might still be terrible, but at least I wont be able to understand what they are singing about.
