Thank you Georgia: If you are slow get the !*$!%*% out of the left lane!
This is honestly one of the things that pisses me off more than any other. The left lane(s) is(are) for passing. If you are going slow in the left lane, get the hell out of my way. If you are going 2mph faster than the lane on your right, STILL GET THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY, and then then pull back in after I pass you.
Slow drivers like this are dangerous. They think that they are doing the right thing and being safe by going slow, but they are causing traffic jams, encouraging dangerous driving, inciting road rage, and breaking the law (though the issue is that law is very weak and never enforced in most states). Georgia, thanks to one lawmaker who had enough, is looking to change all that:
"The House voted 129-29 in just seven minutes to pass and send to the Senate a bill that would set a minimum fine of $75 for any motorist driving less than the speed limit in the left lane who refuses to pull to the right when a faster vehicle approaches."
Sadly - this applies only to vehicles driving under the speedlimit. It really should apply at any speed (see Germany for details) but to Americans that would seem too much like sanctioning driving faster than 55mpg (ohmygolly whatever would we do?).
Rep. Mark Butler, R-Carrollton is the hero of the hour, introducing the bill and stating "I don't think I'm alone in saying this, but there are so many times when you're alone on a four-land road, and people will get over in the left-hand lane, which by law is supposed to be used for passing, and will just sit there and use it as their own personal drive-out lane, and they may be going 50 miles per hour. It's slowing down traffic," he said. "It's frustrating."
