The Holden Commodore is Back: Chevy "SS" Coming Next Year?
Ahh the Holden Commodore. For the better part of a decade, American enthusiasts have been hearing about this platform. First, Pontiac was bringing back the GTO. And while that car was good, it looked like a mid-90's Chevy and so never sold that well.
After the GTO came and went, we were promised a new Zeta architecture car. It was teased in the movie Transformers, and about 18mo later (not kidding - it took forever) the Camaro came to be.
But, there was still an issue. The Camaro is a muscle car, true. But at the same time, we were promised something more - we were promised a sports sedan.
And so we got one, in the form of the Pontiac G8. And for a few beautiful months, that car was on sale.
But before it even reached its first birthday, Pontiac was sent to the great scrapheap in the sky, and the G8 with it. This was very sad, because this was one of the best performance bargains on the market at the time. For people like me who would want to buy one used in a few years - the GXP stick shift will be a unicorn worth hunting for.
After the G8 left our shores, Chevy told us that there would be a new RWD beast coming back... but you and I couldn't buy one: it was going to be a police only special.
Oh how GM loves to tease.
Because now, it seems a new Zeta is coming back, and this one you can buy. GM says that its new NASCAR model will be something not currently on sale. In addition, a tag for "SS Performance" showed up in OnStar. There have also been comments about how the Zeta platform will expand from GM execs.
So - what are we going to get? At this point - I don't know. But we are going to get something, and that's good.
