Google Sucks at Being a Store: 1/4 the Revenue of the Amazon App Store

Image

Shocking? It is to me. The native app store on Android is pulling down about 1/4 of what the Amazon app store is pulling down.

Does it make sense to me? Yeah - the Amazon store is more intuitive to navigate and just better to use, not to mention being the only one available on the Kindle Fire... but there are way way more android phones out there than Kindle Fires.

It actually kind of blows me away that the Amazon App Store is so much bigger than the Google one.

It also brings home a real issue I have with Google right now: I like Google, but they are getting worse and worse at actually making any money. Sure, search throws off money like Bill Clinton at a strip club, but the mobile business? Not so much. Google has so far made about $500 million in revenue on its mobile business... but spent $20 billion to get there. No MBA needed to understand that is one shitty return on investment.

My question is this: if you are giving the operating system away for free, and letting one of your main competitors beat the crap out of you in selling content for the device... how the hell are you planning on making money? Mobile search and in-game advertising is where most of that $500 million came from, and as you can see - it just 'aint paying the rent.
