New Bugatti: This one is for profit
VW has rolled out and approved the 'replacement' for the Veyron. Though calling it a replacement is a bit ridiculous. The new car will be a 4 door sedan with a de-tuned version of the Veyron engine and a standard 8-speed automatic with a torque converter instead of the amazing purpose-built dual-clutch transmission made to handle the 1001hp of the Veyron.
Personally, I think it looks really boring and ugly. And here is the extra catch: it costs $1.5 million, or 50% MORE than the Veyron.
My take on it is this: the Veyron had a staggering development budget. It was the Concorde of cars. Because of this, VW was never able to build them at a profit. Even at $1 million a pop, it was estimated that VW was loosing millions on every one built, or more specifically lost millions on each overall because of the sunk costs of the development budget, even if they were profitable to manufacture in a variable costs sense.
This is their attempt to recoup those costs. The development budget must have been a tiny fraction of that from the Veyron, it is much simpler mechanically, uses a de-tuned engine, does not at all push the envelope (though it is clearly still impressive with a 215mpg top speed). It even has derivative and I would say boring styling. So buy one of these if you feel bad that VW lost money selling you your Veyron. Otherwise, I dont see the point.
