An Abu Dhabi investment firm has just bought a third of Virgin Galactic for $280 million, thus valuing the venture at $840 million. Which isn't bad, considering there are no profits.
The Abu Dhabi firm will build their own spaceport in the UAE, so this is really more of an expansion than a simple investment. I hope all of this rapidly gets regulatory approval, because I am a big fan of anything which speeds up private space flight.
This is a great story - Gunther and his wife Christine set out in 1989 after the fall of the Berlin wall to do a tour of Africa. 500,000 miles later that journey is still going. Gunther Holtorf's 23-Year Road Trip from srterbas on Vimeo .
There are a lot of shitty drivers out there. Actually, most people are shitty drivers. They don't really know anything about cars, about driving, about limits of adhesion, how to react when things go badly, or what snow does to your ability to drive. In fact, most people think that driving slowly, regardless of what lane you are in, whether you are merging onto a highway or holding up 50 cars behind you, means "being a good driver." Just because you have spent many years driving in the left lane at 65mph does not make you a good driver, in fact, just the opposite. A good driver means you know how to drive, not that you have gotten lucky or simply average for the past 10 years. Personally, I would love to see a class in high school devoted to driving. I think it could be fun and informative while greatly reducing the number of accidents (especially fatal ones) on the roads every year. Right now, the driving exam is basically a joke, it means that you know what the pedals...
I hate the Prius, I really do. But meet is fatter and more expensive brother, the Lexus HS 250H What is it? Well, its the Lexus version of the Prius, sorta. Except it weighs 650lbs more than the Prius, does not offer a hatchback, looks even worse (its like a fat Lexus Corolla)... and then, to top it all off, it only gets 35mpg. My old ass Saab convertible gets 27mpg, and that's with me revving the hell out of it to drive it the way I like. Oh yeah, and I bought my Saab for $1,500, but this thing (optioned out) costs $45,000. It would take 114 years ($3/gl gas, 15,000 miles/yr) to make up the cost difference. (this lady is actually 114 years old - damn impressive) Supposedly, it is also terrible to drive. Which the Prius is too. But according to auto journals, it is worse than the Prius. Which is kind of like being worse than Brittney Spears at chess.
