Saab RIP?

Koenigsegg has pulled out of a planned purchase of Saab. Which is really too bad, because I was hoping for great things from the combination. Seems that the financing just was not there, and so the Swedish supercar maker has walked away from the deal to buy the once iconic car company of Sweden.

This really is a sad day, because when the same thing happened with Penske and Saturn, the result was the death of the Saturn brand.

With the gorgeous new 9-5 set to be released next year, the timing could only have been worse if the company had already come out with a great looking, amazing handling, high performance, high value new mainstream sedan that could rescue the company only then to be cut down. Wait, that already happened, with Pontiac and the G8.

My point is that the sad thing about the collapse of GM is that they already realized what they needed to do to turn around their brands, and they were in the process of doing it. They saved Cadillac, have essentially saved Chevy (still a work in progress), and were on the cusp of saving Pontiac and then Saab when it all went to shit due to the weight of years of ineptitude crushing down on the company.

It really would be sad to see Saab scuttle off into the sunset. Someone should seriously sit-up and solidify support in order to save Saab and strike out to shape a strong post-struggle stratagem for the once sublime Swedish steadfast.

So here she is, the new Saab 9-5, a sight for sore eyes:
