Obama Comitted to a "nuclear free world"
Sadly, this one is not an April fools joke. Obama has said in discussions with Medvedev that both nations should be committed to a "nuclear free world." Of course, since we live in an age of nuclear proliferation, this is an idiotic statement.
The US and Russia have promised a new treaty to replace START, which expires at the end of this year. The media makes it sound as though there is something actually important about the START treaty. There is not. START essentially limits Russia and the US to 6,000 warheads each. Both have well below that number, with about 2,500 for the US, and possibly more like 1,000 for Russia.
The only mildly interesting thing is that both sides agreed to start work on a treaty which would ban the production of fission material - so that no new bombs can be built. Of course, Russia and the US dont need new fission material, and China, India, N. Korea, Israel, Iran, and Pakistan will never sign the agreement, so it does not matter in the long run anyway.
Finally, they said that both leaders were looking forward to moving past all the negative "cold war" sentiments. How ridiculous can this get? Basically, this is Russia, which has caused all the negative sentimenets and the "drift in the relationship" because of its agreeisve, antagonistic, Cold War stance, and the Obama administration is bending over appologizing to them.
Putin has found his perfect ally, Neville Chamberlain reborn.
