"Ground Zero" "Mosque"
Time for a little revisionism here. In an earlier article (mostly about how the media has decided these days to simply interpret Obama's words in wildly divergent manners, and ignore their real content: very little) I stated that I thought the Ground Zero mosque was a bad idea.
I was reacting without all of the information.
First, it turns out it is not at Ground Zero at all, its a block away on the site of an old Burlington Coat Factory. And, it's not a mosque at all. It is an Islamic cultural center. My words from last week? "Have an educational center about Islam or something like that, but a mosque really seems like a bad fit." - and that was assuming it was actually at Ground Zero, which is isn't.
The final piece of the puzzle is Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, who has been repeatedly sent on speaking tours by the Bush and Obama State Departments alike to promote tolerance in Arab and Muslim nations. The board of the project is multicultural and rather typical liberal New Yorkers - though they can be a pain in the ass, there is nothing in this whole proposal or project to write about.
This is certainly a case where the media has blown the entire situation way out of proportion. They should be spending more time reporting the facts (such as those above) than spouting off and covering x's reaction to y as if it were news.
