Tire of the Future: Polaris TerrainArmor - News - ExPo: Adventure and Overland Travel Enthusiasts

Pretty damn awesome... looking forward to having these on a Wrangler in a few years..

It would appear the concept of a non-pneumatic off-road tire is making a rapid transition from theory to reality with the Polaris TerrainAmor tire as offered on their Sportsman MV 850 TA Edition ATV. We began seeing prototype non-pneumatic tires several years ago, but it seemed those first efforts would never bare fruit as a host of engineering complications conspired to continually put off final production. Polaris has since overcome many of those challenges to offer a tire which has been exhaustively tested in military applications over the last year.

The list of insults the TerrainArmor tire endured during those military trials is impressive. They survived more than 6,000 miles of hard use with a full combat load. They logged more than a 1,000 miles with railroad spikes driven into the tread surface and were also shot by AK47 and .50 cal rounds. After all of those assaults, they managed to carry on undaunted. Testers also claimed the tire showed improved traction over traditional tires due to the 90 degree aspect of the sidewall and the increase in surface area contacting the ground.
The TerrainArmor tire has been such a success, it was nominated for Tire Technology of the Year by Tire Technology International. It’s only a matter of time before the non-pneumatic tire is made available to the public. They do look interesting, don't they?
