Why private companies are better than public monopolies

I recently had an issue with the USPS where they claimed to have delivered a package from Amazon to my front door. To the best of my knowledge, they never did, and I am highly doubtful that it showed up and then was somehow rapidly stolen in the middle of the day in Arlington. I could be wrong, but I would be surprised. The confusion came talking to the post office because you have to call before 9:00am to talk to anyone who knows anything. Turns out our regular guy was taking a day off on monday, so he did not know what happened. The guy who "delivered" it was taking a day yesterday. Finally talked to him today, and he says he remembers a package. Sure, whatever.

Amazon on the other hand, quickly gave me a full refund for the cost of the purchase, including shipping.

I am pretty damn impressed with Amazon, and disappointed (though unsurprised) with the USPS.

There are a lot of shitty drivers out there. Actually, most people are shitty drivers. They don't really know anything about cars, about driving, about limits of adhesion, how to react when things go badly, or what snow does to your ability to drive. Doomsday Bunkers for What? "Preppers" Are Idiots

Recently I wrote about the 10 best doomsday survival shelters in the world . These make sense - they are for continuity of government, they are so mankind will survive, they are all about long-term planning or strategic defense. But, I just came across a brand new show on Discovery - "Doomsday Bunkers" - and it's stupid. Interesting, but stupid. It turns out that there is a whole community of people out there who believe Y2K is still coming think Fallout 3, the Book of Eli, or Mad Max is just around the corner. And so they are "prepping" - getting ready for the zombie apocalypse. The craziest of them - or perhaps just the most obsessive or those with the most money.... spend $50,000-$1,000,000 building underground bunkers to protect themselves from... something. Cozy...
